Environmental Specialist (Maternity Cover)

AES Bulgaria is seeking an experienced Environmental Specialist to join our team. This position will be responsible for environmental compliance, permitting and oversight of AES facilities working under the direction of the Environmental Regulations. Our ideal candidate will be a qualified expert with an excellent understanding of environmental and natural sciences. Environmental Specialist will organize, coordinate and control the activities related to environment protection according to the applicable European and national legislation and environmental permits and corporate standards, best available technics and environmental practices.
This position will report to the Environmental Health and Safety Manager.

Location: Stara Zagora

Key tasks:
• Exercises control over contractors and employees for keeping of the requirements of regulatory acts, active permits and corporate standards on environment management including but not limited to water, emissions, noise, soils, waste, hazardous substances and execution of their duties in this field.
• Upon finding violations/incompliances related to the management of water, emissions, noise, waste, hazardous substances and soils, prescribes corrective measures for eliminating the non-compliances and controls their execution.
• Creates, checks and signs internal and external documents related to the waste and handing over to authorized companies including transboundary movement.
• Participates in the development, implementation and maintenance of management systems related to the management of waters, emissions, noise, waste, hazardous substances and soils and the necessary procedures and instructions.
• Performs on time and quality reporting to Bulgarian authorities and AES EHSS group related to environmental compliance, including continuous emission monitoring system oversight, data validation and assessment.

• Ensures that environment management is in compliance with all applicable legislation, regulations, permits and corporate standards;
• Participates in the selection, assessment and audit of contractors dealing with environment monitoring and exercises control over their activity;
• Participates in the development, implementation and audit of Environmental management system;
• Keeps environment management documentation and prepares assessment compliance protocols and environmental reports in compliance with the corporate requirements, IPPCs GHG permit requirements, environmental legislation and upon request from the competent bodies. Responsible for the environmental reporting to AES Corporation;
• Performs walk downs and checks on the territory of the power plant and controls whether environment protection measures are applied. Reports incompliance regarding the environment protection and emergency situations/incidents. If any violations related to the environment protection are found prescribes measures and observes whether they are followed;
• Prepares and delivers internal company trainings on environment management;
• Communicates with competent bodies about the issues of the management of waters, emissions, noise, waste, hazardous substances and soils;
• Participates in company/corporation ecological projects and initiatives and performs other assignments;
• Provides support to the St Nikola Wind Farm and Waste Disposal facility related to environmental management;
• Supports development, maintenance, and achievement of corporate goals, strategic initiatives designed to produce operational excellence.

• Bachelor's/Master’s degree in one of the following fields: Ecology or Chemistry;
• Proficiency knowledge in all national and European legislation and best available technics related to large combustion plants and waste treatment and disposal
• Ability to work with minimal guidance or supervision;
• Ability to be flexible and quickly adapt to changing business needs and processes;
• Ability to think analytically and logically;
• Strong quantitative skills and experience with statistical analysis;
• Demonstrates proficiency with Excel and other Microsoft Office products;
• A minimum of 2 years’ experience in a similar role;
• Excellent command of English B2/C1.
